If you're in town for Balloon Week and looking to vote early, Cowra and Orange are the closest early voting centres to Canowindra. ✍️ Cowra Uniting Church - 75A Darling Street, Cowra NSW, 2794 will open for early voting on Saturday 26th April, then from Monday 28 April - Friday 2 May. St Barnabas Parish Hall - 381 Summer Street, Orange, NSW 2800 and 24 Telopea Way, Orange, NSW 2800. Opening from Tuesday 22 April - Thursday 24 April, Saturday 26 April and Monday 28 April - Friday 2 May. All early voting centres will be closed on Easter Monday, 21 April, and Anzac Day, Friday 25 April.

After seven months of discussions and several fals

After seven months of discussions and several false starts, the Canowindra Balloon Festival last night received approval from the relevant authorities to conduct the world’s first ‘loop the loop’ attempt in a balloon. The world record will be attempted at low level over the Sports Ground at sunrise on Day one of the festival in a spectacular display that is sure to draw larger than normal crowds, as well as a huge media throng. Although not necessarily dangerous, the stunt will involve quite an amount of logistical effort in order to get the momentum and timing right. Festival Director Brendon Mulloy explained that the process to get the balloon and associated equipment in place ‘will be a masterpiece of coordination between the highly experienced pilot and up to thirty crew, and will be a spectacle not to be missed’. Tickets to the event will be free to all though need to be managed due to the expected turnout, and will be released on this site by the end of this week.

A common question from this morning: which direction are the balloons headed? Hot air balloons are not able to be steered, the balloon moves with the wind. We do our best to predict the general direction, but sometimes nature has other ideas, especially after sunrise when the earth starts to warm, creating air currents and vortices. This morning the general direction of flight was to the north-west and we will try to share the predicted direction on future updates!

In July last year, the ballooning community lost an absolute legend, when Paul ‘Britto’ Britliff lost his battle with cancer. Britto was an eternal ratbag, who would do anything for his mates and was loved by many both here in Canowindra, across Australia and throughout the global ballooning community. Britto had a talent for taking cracking photos of the world as he experienced it. This led to the start of the #BeMoreBritto tag, to define an excellent photo. Between 20-24 April, another balloonist and artist, John Turnbull, has teamed up with Britto’s partner Helen, to host a tribute and silent auction for artworks John has painted from Britto’s inspiration and photo prints that captured Britto’s Exceptional Eye For Detail. John’s Art & A Select Range Of Britto’s Prints can be viewed in the Briefing Hall at the Canowindra Services Club, with the auction results announced at 3pm on 24 April. So come along to the Services Club, grab a beer from Bulla Creek Brewing and or a glass of bubbles (double parked was a thing) check out the art on display and make a bid.
